Hazardous Materials Spill
Hazardous Materials are located throughout Outagamie County. They are stored within facilities and are transported by train and truck. These materials can be explosive, flammable, poisonous, and radioactive. A release of hazardous materials can occur during production, transportation, storage, or disposal. It is essential that everyone in the community is prepared for a release and know what to do in the event of an incident.
Radiological
Outagamie County is located within the 50 mile Ingestion Zone of Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant. Within the Ingestion Zone, the main focus is to protect food supply, water, and agricultural products from a long-term radioactive contamination. This Zone does not need to immediately evacuate following an radioactive release; however, it is best practice for first responders and the community to prepare for one. To learn more about Outagamie County's radiological planning, please visit Plans page and locate "ESF #16 - Radiological/Ingestion Zone 2025" under "Outagamie County ERP Components" drop down bar.
Preparedness
Below are general tips of what to do before, during, and after a hazardous materials release/spill.
Before
- Know your risks! Be informed of what hazardous materials are in your community. Check out our Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) page for more information
- Know the signs of a chemical release: difficulty breathing, eye irritation, loss of coordination, nausea, or burning in the nose, through, or lungs
- Create and practice a Family Emergency Plan
- Build an Emergency Supply Kit and Go Bag
- Emergency Supply Kits are essential for shelter in place situations
- Go Bags are essential for a quick evacuation
During
- Listen for orders from first responders
- If asked to evacuate, grab your go bag, pets, and any other essentials. Evacuate immediately and follow the directions form local first responders
- If asked to shelter in place, seek shelter in an internal room. Ensure all family members and pets are inside. Close off vents and seal your room with duct tape and plastic sheeting. Turn off all ventilation systems. Do not eat or drink anything until there is an all clear from first responders
After
- Safety First! Do not leave your shelter in place location or return home until first responders deem the area safe
- Seek medical attention if you have symptoms caused by the hazardous material
