Tornadoes

Tornadoes are violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground. 

High Winds

For our area, high winds are associated with severe thunderstorms. During a storm, straight line winds can exceed 100 mph. 

Preparedness

Before

  • Preparing your home includes:
    • Securing loose and light weight outside items
    • Secure loose gutters and shutters
  • Update your emergency supply kit. Incase of power outage, make sure your power banks are charged
  • Know where to shelter if a warning is issued. Make sure everyone in the household is aware of this location
  • Make sure to have many ways to receive weather alerts

During 

  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Move to the most interior room or basement
    • If it takes your or your family longer to move to your safety area, start moving during a tornado watch
  • Stay informed of the weather by listening to the news or a weather radio
  • If driving, slow down and use caution!
    • Try to get to a sturdy building for safe sheltering
    • Do not take shelter under an overpass or bridge
      • Find a low, flat area

After

  • Do not go near powerlines
  • Do not walk under damaged trees or other dangling objects
  • Wear proper clothing when handling debris (sturdy closed toe shoes, gloves, pants, and long sleeves)

Watches

High Winds

Strong winds are possible with an approaching weather system. Prepare yourself!

  • Secure loose and light weight outdoor items
  • Adjust any plans, if necessary

Tornadoes

Tornadoes are expected in or near the identified watch area. Be prepared:

  • Prep your safe room incase of a tornado warning
  • Actively monitor the news, social, media, and a weather radio

Advisories

High Winds

Strong winds are occurring, but they are not strong enough to issue a warning. Secure outdoor items and take caution while traveling. 

Warnings

High Winds

Sustained, strong winds are occurring. Seek shelter immediately. If you are driving, slow down and use caution. 

Tornadoes

Issued when a tornado has been sighted or is indicated by weather radar. Take action now!

  • Move to your safety area (most interior room or basement)
  • If you are in a mobile home, car, or outdoors, locate the nearest sturdy building to take shelter in
